Food Rescue

Food Rescue won't fix that. The problem sits in a food system built to centralise and move food away from the places that grow it, and no amount of rescue changes that. But while that system keeps producing surplus, one thing is clear: good food doesn't belong in landfill.
 

What we do

• Collect surplus food donated by supermarkets, cafés, growers, businesses.

• Redistribute it to community groups, marae and community houses across Waikato.

• Share surplus fruit and vege from local growers and orchards when it's available.

 

Most of our Food Rescue team are volunteers. For over ten years we’ve kept over three million kgs of food out of landfill.

Turning food into kai: He Manawaroa

We've formed a new partnership project called He Manawaroa with The Serve. He Manawaroa will turn rescued food into kai. The Serve Trust cooks community meals 365 days a year and together we are going to make sure that people have a place to sit down and share a meal together.

Food Rescue has moved from Pou Para Kore to sit within Pou Kai. It began in our zero-waste mahi under Pou Para Kore, and keeping food out of landfill is still a big part of what it does. But for us, it's about more than reducing emissions. It's about turning that food into kai, and growing the skills that come with it: cooking, preserving, and the manaakitanga of sharing kai with others.

Kai motuhake is food and water sovereignty, grown from the ground up, for hapori by hapori. The move puts Food Rescue alongside the mahi working on the longer-term change: Harvest Helpers, community gardens, compost systems, fruit trees and food forests, and community food-sharing. That's where local kai systems get built. Food Rescue deals with what the current system leaves behind.
