Located in the heart of Frankton in Hamilton, Go Eco is a hub of community environmental education, connection and information. Our signature project is Kaivolution Food Rescue which is all about collecting surplus food and redistributing it to community groups.
How we started
In 1993 Hamilton City Council established the Hamilton Community Environmental Programme (CEP). The Programme was based on a growing community interest in maintaining and enhancing the local environment, and in recognition of a diverse range of skills, creativity and energy that the community possesses to make things happen. The Programme flourished into a forum represented by the plethora of environmental groups and organisations which now exist in Hamilton and the wider Waikato region. In 2002 the Hamilton Environment Centre Trust was formed to continue this valuable work. In 2010 the Trust broadened its focus from Hamilton City to the greater Waikato region changing it's name to the Waikato Environment Centre Trust.
After over a decade upstairs in Ward Street, in 2014 the Trust moved to a high profile site in Peachgrove Road. The new site has enabled us to engage in new activities which support environmental well being including Kaivolution Food Rescue, E-Waste Recycling, running a Sustainable Living Retail outlet and providing community education.
New location; new brand
By 2017, the Centre had outgrown its premises at Five Crossroads and relocated to bigger premises. Kaivolution was bursting at the seems with demand in the area for a service that could handle larger volumes of food waste.
Events and workshops were growing in popularity too so we needed more space.
The relocation happened in July and the Centre was moved to the former Post Shop building in Frankton Village. The interior of the building had some updating and brightening up, but held on to some of the original features, adding character and a reminder of the building's history.
Along with the larger premises came a change of name - Go Eco - and a new look for the centre that better reflected the expansion of the centre and the scope of its activities.
